The lower bound method for reduced density matrices

We show that the second order reduced density matrix can be accurately esti mated using a variational treatment where the entries of the third order ma trix appear as variational parameters. We: also discuss a fundamental Optim ization Theorem, which can be applied in this variational method, and intro duce the notion of dual configuration interaction.
