In dynamically loaded journal bearings it is important to predict and asses
s the performance of lubricants within the bearing with respect to friction
, wear and load bearing capacity over a wide range of operating conditions.
In this paper, a mathematical model is described which allows for a system
atic study of the effects of shear-thinning, pressure-thickening and temper
ature-thinning viscosity on the dynamics and stability of a journal bearing
. It is also shown that the thermal conductivity of the bearing can have a
major effect on the minimum oil film thickness attained in the bearing. (C)
