ews. Matthews began hist career at the India Office Library. In 1957, he wo
rked at the Royal Library, in Stockholm, where he honed his skill as an ind
exer. His other official posts included Librarian at the Home Office in Lon
don, England, and Librarian at the London Library. The Royal Society of Lit
erature made Matthews a Fellow in 1999.
