In fall 1918 Alfred Wegener (1880-1930) was ordered to the German universit
y at Dorpat (Tartu/Estonia). From October until the closure of the universi
ty at the end of November 1918, he lectured on meteorology and was "directo
r of the meteorological cabinet and observatory", His influence on the mete
orology at Dorpat is especially shown in the research Johannes Letzmann (18
85-1971) started under his supervision. Besides, Wegener provided Karl Augu
st Frisch (1892-1953, since 1935 named Kaarel Kirde) with further education
, who later became professor of geophysics at the university and director o
f the meteorological observatory at Dorpat. Wegener's scientifically so pro
ductive stay and his influence on the meteorology in Dorpat will be shown i
n context with the end of World War I in the Baltic provinces.
