The interaction of short envelope solitons with external wave fields is con
sidered in the framework of the third-order nonlinear Schrodinger equation.
First, the scattering of external fields at a soliton with constant parame
ters is analyzed. Then the variation of soliton parameters is considered in
the adiabatic approximation. This variation is caused by the nonlinear dis
persion. Estimates of the amplification of short optical solitons with dura
tion of a few femtoseconds in fibers are given. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B
