Abstract
A fiber optic pH sensor based on evanescent wave absorption is present ed. To prepare the probe a small length of the cladding is removed fro m the middle portion of the fiber. A thin porous film of glass with pH -sensitive dye entrapped in it is deposited on the surface of the uncl ad portion of the fiber using sol-gel technology. The sensor response and its dynamic range are reported for phenol red, cresol red and brom ophenol blue dyes. The sol-gel process has been found to increase the dynamic range of the pH sensor.
