The surface morphology of (001)-oriented single crystal MgO has been s
tudied as a function of annealing temperature using atomic force micro
scopy. The surface undergoes two significant changes in the temperatur
e range 500 to 1750 degrees C. Following annealing at 1000 degrees C s
urface facetting is visible with the formation of well-defined steps a
nd terraces. Following annealing at temperatures greater than or equal
to 1500 degrees C the faceted surface structure is lost and planariza
tion of the surface occurs.
