ve flow of livestock exports to North America in the nineteenth century. Th
is article deals with various aspects of the organization of the trade in C
lydesdale and Shire horses, considers the origin and destination of animals
reaching the USA and Canada, and considers some of the reasons why the ini
tial popularity of British breeds evaporated int he face of importations fr
om mainland Europe.
