G. Schulte-altedorneburg et al., A novel method of macropathologic and arteriographic examination of carotid specimens obtained from autopsy, CARDIO IN R, 23(4), 2000, pp. 312-314
Twenty carotid bifurcations were examined. During autopsy, carotid bifurcat
ions were removed in tote. Unfixed carotids were ligated and cannulated for
injection of an angiographic contrast medium followed by injection of a ti
ssue-embedding medium at physiologic pressure and temperature. The carotid
bifurcation was frown and cut manually in 3-mm cross-sections. Photographs
were then taken of every slice. Angiography, filling with tissue-embedding
material, and sectioning were successful in all cases. In the macropatholog
ic sections, the extent, configuration and location of atherosclerotic lesi
ons could be identified.
