The lightning performance of 63 kV and 90 kV shielded and unshielded l
ines, protected by line surge arresters are considered. A specialized
software package is used for the computation of the line fast front tr
ansients. A Monte Carlo statistical method, together with a three-dime
nsional electrogeometric model is used to determine the lightning stro
ke locations. Different arrester installation configurations are analy
zed and compared. The energy duties of the line surge arresters are co
mputed statistically.
