Ja. Le Roux et al., Self-consistent injection and acceleration of pickup ions at the solar wind termination shock, GEOPHYS R L, 27(18), 2000, pp. 2873-2876
A unified description of pickup and anomalous cosmic ray proton transport i
n the near ecliptic regions of the upwind heliosphere is presented. Multipl
y reflected ion acceleration theory is used for the injection of pickup pro
tons into the diffusive shock acceleration mechanism, so yielding the anoma
lous cosmic ray component at the quasi-perpendicular termination shock. The
results show that both the multiply reflected and simultaneously accelerat
ed pickup protons and the anomalous protons significantly modify the termin
ation shock. Although the shock mediation lowers the cut-off speed of the a
ccelerated pickup protons, a sufficient large population of anomalous proto
ns is accelerated at the termination shock to give a favorable comparison o
f the modulated anomalous proton spectra upstream with observations at larg
e heliocentric distances.
