Multidimensional scaling is used to examine the relation between vocational
interests as conceptualized by Holland's (1973, 1997) hexagonal model and
a newly proposed individual differences construct, called the motivation to
lead or MTL (Chan, 1999). The findings support the hypothesis that the MTL
construct, while correlated with certain interest domains (e.g., social an
d enterprising), is orthogonal to Holland's hexagonal model of interests. T
he findings have implications for general theory on the nature of job versu
s role interests at work and for the MTL construct. (C) 2000 Academic Press
