The effect of the initial nitrite concentration on the growth of S. platens
is was experimentally investigated using the medium added to the sodium nit
rite of 0.0-1.6 kg . m(-3). When the initial nitrite concentration is small
er than 0.8 kg . m(-3), the growth rate is greater than that without nitrit
e. The specific growth rate had the maximum value and is approximately 1.3
times that of a standard medium when the range of the initial nitrite conce
ntration is 0.3-0.4 kg . m(-3). When the initial nitrite concentration is g
reater than 0.8 kg . m(-3), the growth rate was smaller than that of a stan
dard medium due to nitrite inhibition.
