Predictors of condom use were identified in a sample of 87 Mexican mig
rants with an average of 6.4 years living and working in the United St
ates since 1982. Results of stepwise multiple regression analyses indi
cated that condom use with both occasional and regular sex partners, a
s well as carrying condoms, were predicted by having friends that carr
y and use condoms and by being married/living with someone. Greater am
ounts of time spent in the United States also predicted condom use wit
h occasional sex partners, and carrying condoms was predicted by highe
r levels of education and male gender. Tile influence of social-interp
ersonal factors on condom use and the implications of these findings f
or future research and for informing culturally responsive AIDS preven
tion programs and policies targeting Mexican migrants are discussed.
