Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have become some of the most
commonly used medications in Western nations since the introduction of the
first NSAID, aspirin, about one century ago. Although adverse effects of NS
AIDs occur only in a few individuals, the widespread use of NSAIDs has resu
lted in a substantial number of affected persons who experience serious gas
trointestinal complications. The development of newer, safer NSAID preparat
ions should provide better treatment options.
