Abstract
In this paper, the influence of vibration in the horizontal plane on t he phenomenon of vortexing during draining of liquid from a cylindrica l container is described. The studies are carried out when vibration i s imparted without and with initial rotation. Flow visualisation resul ts are presented which give a visual picture of the phenomenon. The in vestigation brings out that the vortexing phenomenon can be quite diff erent from the case when the vibration occurs in the vertical plane.
