Abstract
The power deposited by a 20 MW beam of 2 GeV protons has been calculated fo r a Liquid Mercury Target. Beam size and shape critically influence the dep osited power density. A principle limitation of the liquid metal is in the temperature range that can be considered should boiling bo avoided while op erating at a relatively high repetition rate(> 50 Hz). This has a limiting effect on the power that can be dissipated by the target. (C) 2000 Publishe d by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
