Studies examining the economic impact of tourism have traditionally fo
cused on the inbound tourist. The conceptualization of tourism in econ
omic impact studies, however, should be extended to include outbound l
ocal tourists and the means of transport. This comprehensive perspecti
ve may be gained by looking at tourism from the point of view of imple
mentation of air services on particular routes. A procedure is outline
d for the estimation of the net economic impact of services by a forei
gn carrier. This procedure is then applied to estimate the economic im
pact on Thailand's economy generated by additional weekly services on
the on the Singapore-Bangkok route by Singapore Airlines. (C) 1997 Els
