Abstract
Using the bubble chamber technique; double-pion production cross sections i
nduced by deuteron-proton collision's were measured in the deuteron inciden
t momentum range of 2.1 to 3.8 GeV/c. The nucleon-nucleon double-pion produ
ction cross sections were also deduced from the data. The dp double-pion pr
oduction data were interpreted as the sum of nucleon-nucleon double-pion pr
oduction reactions involving only one of the nucleons in the deuteron, and
two sequential nucleon-nucleon single-pion production reactions involving b
oth nucleons in the deuteron. Good fits to the data were obtained, if the n
ucleon-nucleon double-pion production is assumed to go through intermediate
states involving N(1440) and Delta(1232), and each nucleon-nucleon single-
pion production is assumed to go through the intermediate N Delta(1232) sta
te.
