Abstract
Babesiosis is a tick-born hemoprotozoan disease which can, in the case of B abesia canis, cause severe illness. Depending on the pathogenicity of the s train severe anemia, hypotensive shock, metabolic acidosis, renal failure a nd other symptoms can be found. In acute cases diagnosis can be made by mic roscopic examination of a stained blood-smear, whereas in chronic cases the diagnosis is confirmed by serological methods (IFAT, ELISA). Specific ther apy should be initiated as soon as possible. Supportive therapy depends on the symptoms and must not be neglected. For prevention a vaccine is availab le, which is, however, not approved in Germany. Chemoprophylaxis with imido carbdiproprionat is also possible.
