In Eastern Galicia 540,000 Jews lived in 1941, 3% of who survived mass murd
er. After pogroms with Ukrainian participation, and mass executions of male
Jews, wholesale genocide started in October 1941. A bigger part of the Jew
ish minority fell victim to deportations to Belzec extermination camp, in 1
943 mass executions were relaunched. Preparation of the murder actions was
based on a cooperation of the S.S.-Police apparatus (including Ukrainian au
xiliary police) and the civil administration; debate evolved exclusively co
ncerning Jewish workforce. Knowledge of mass murder was widespread under oc
cupation.
