A cerium(IV)-induced Cypridina luciferin analog (CLA) chemiluminescence is
reported. This Ce(IV) triggered luciferin analog CL is enhanced about 5-fol
d by 0.5% (v/v) Tween 20. Using this enhanced luciferin analog-dependent ch
emiluminescence, a lower limit detection of 25 nM was determined for Ce(IV)
. Ce(III) could not generate this luciferin analog-dependent chemiluminesce
nce. Oxidising agents such as potassium permanganate and potassium dichroma
te were also without effect. While the tested scavengers of reactive specie
s such as mannitol, superoxide dismutase and catalase had no specific effec
t on the luminescence, this Ce(IV)-elicited luciferin analog chemiluminsece
nt reaction was inhibited when the reaction was performed under anaerobic c
ondition, indicating that molecular oxygen participates in the reaction mec
hanism leading to the formation of the light-emitting product. A mechanism
is proposed for this chemiluminescent reaction which is consistent with the
presented data. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
