This paper examines tourism planning and management in the Andean community
of Taquile Island, Peru. A framework of community integration in tourism w
as developed and applied to this community in a case study approach. The in
tention of this framework is to help guide planning, development, managemen
t, research, and evaluation of community-based tourism projects Community i
ntegration in tourism was primarily defined in terms of decision-making pow
er structures and processes, local control or ownership, type and distribut
ion of employment, and the number of local people employed in the local tou
rism sector. It was found that a high level of community integration on Taq
uile Island led to greater socioeconomic benefits for a majority of residen
ts.
