Abstract
The analog performance of a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser is compa red for gain and cavity loss modulation. Direct gain modulation consistentl y results in a larger spur free dynamic range (SFDR) than does cavity loss modulation; the maximum SFDR achieved is 96.5 dB Hz(2/3). Analysis of the p hysical origins of variations in the measured SFDR with applied electrical bias indicates potential strategies for improving the analog response of th ese lasers.
