An amino acid was released from the O-specific polysaccharide of Proteus mi
rabilis O13 by acid hydrolysis and identified as N-epsilon-[(R)-1-carboxyet
hyl]-L-lysine by comparison with the authentic sample. An amide of this ami
no acid with D-galacturonic acid was isolated from the polysaccharide by so
lvolysis with anhydrous trifluoromethanesulfonic (triflic) acid and charact
erised by H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. These and published data enabled d
etermination of the full structure of the repeating unit of the polysacchar
ide. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
