Abstract
The aim of this paper is to present a method to generate computational, geo metric models of 3D objects defined in the form of a 'cloud of points' (CoP ). These objects can then be discretized for subsequent finite element anal yses. Various procedures required to achieve this are briefly described, in cluding the mathematical representation pf an integrated image acquisition/ modelling system, which allows for the automatic creation of accurate geome tric models of either scanned images of objects or of CoP generally, as wel l as the mesh generation algorithm employed. The application of this combin ed method is then demonstrated with respect to modelling human organs and a gricultural objects. The main emphasis of the paper is on the wide applicab ility of the developed techniques. (C) 2000 Civil-Comp Ltd. and Elsevier Sc ience Ltd. All rights reserved.
