The setting of Schubert's 'Lieder' must be understood as documents of how t
he Romantic literary movement was received in music. In order to show this,
the role of music and the musical within the framework of romantic poetics
and language philosophy has to be re-considered. This makes it possible to
apply the capacity of music to display its own materiality to the self-ref
erentiality of the Romantic poem. Taking up this approach, the study centre
