In this paper, a novel converter for a switched reluctance motor (SRM) driv
e system is proposed. A. small capacitance is used to store the energy extr
acted from an offgoing phase and raise the de bus voltage during phase comm
utation. The raised bus voltage can turn on the next ongoing phase and turn
off the offgoing phase quickly. As a result, the commutation interval of t
he motor is effectively reduced. The transient and load disturbance respons
es of the drive system are improved, and the adjustable speed range is exte
nded. In addition, this new converter is simple and easy to implement. Only
a few extra components are required. Based on this new converter, a high p
erformance SRM drive system has been designed. A 32-bit microprocessor base
d system has been implemented to verify the proposed methods. Several exper
imental results show that the proposed drive system performs better than th
e traditional drive systems. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights rese
