The illusion of literary space in La 'Gazette de Montreal'

An archeological reflexion on the first Quebec literary journal: the Gazett e litteraire de Montreal (1778-1779). What light does this short interval o f Quebec's cultural life shed on nascent literary 'institution'? At a time when the Province of Quebec had had printing presses for only a very short period of time, when education was largely deficient and when the public sp here was only being put in place, were not those who were behind this liter ary gazette fantasizing about the creation of a Republic of Letters as the European model?
