Abstract
The dependence of the deuteron NMR spectra of alpha-CD2 deuterated CE-8 and MHPOBC on the angle between the normals to the smectic layers and the magn etic field direction has been measured for the ferroelectric Sm C* and the antiferroelectric Sm C-A* phases. The spectra confirm the alternating tilt structure of the Sm C-A* phase and show the existence of rapid molecular ex change between adjacent smectic layers on a time scale of 10(-5) s.
