Abstract
We use a discrete phenomenological model to find theoretically the dielectr ic response of antiferroelectric liquid crystals in harmonic external elect ric fields. We find an analytical expression for the dielectric loss in ter ms of the eigenfrequencies of the phase and the amplitude mode. The tempera ture dependence of the dielectric loss is presented for the SmC*(A), SmC*(a lpha) and SmC* phases.
