Abstract
Our linearly photopolymerized (LPP) photo-alignment technology enables to o ptically align liquid crystals, thus avoiding mechanical brushing. We show that hybrid photo-aligned LPP/LCP (liquid crystal polymer-) layers as thin as 12nm exhibit excellent alignment properties for ferroelectric LCD's. LPP -aligned deformed helix ferroelectric LCD's exhibit single domain alignment with contrast ratios >200:1, response times < 200 mu s and enable full gra y scale reproduction without ghost images.
