Among the many variables governing the shrinkage of ceramic substrate, pack
ing density is the most important. The effect of binder content on the shri
nkage behavior of a free and constrained sintering glass-ceramic multilayer
ed substrate is investigated. For lower packing density, the packing of cer
amics within the glass-ceramic green sheets was looser and a higher sinteri
ng shrinkage was obtained. A good agreement between the calculated and expe
rimental vertical shrinkage is obtained for constrained sintering glass-cer
amic substrates using the proposed analytical procedure.
