L. Chi, Boundary studies (Design exercises developed to open critical and creativeperception of occupied and populated spatiality), J ARCHIT ED, 53(2), 1999, pp. 115-121
The design exercises presented here were developed to open critical and cre
ative perception of occupied and populated spatiality. The studio worked wi
th two tactics: a focal theme that asked students to consider boundary cond
itions in temporal, situational, and social terms; and the use of full-scal
e installations as speculative devices. As experiments to raise questions a
bout what constitutes form, site, and program, the exercises also aimed at
initiating inquiry into architecture's effects, limits, and accountability.
