Abstract
Lipophilic lanthanide complexes acted as effective receptors of inorga
nic/organic anions, zwitterionic amino acids and other water-soluble g
uests under neutral conditions. They were electrically neutralized but
formed highly coordinated 1:1 complexes with various guests. FAB-MS,
NMR and CD spectroscopic studies as well as extraction and liquid memb
rane transport experiments revealed that they exhibited largely differ
ent receptor functions from common receptors: Lanthanide tris(beta-dik
etonates) effectively transported hydrophilic Cl- anion and zwitterion
ic amino acids; Chiral ytterbium complex offered enantioselective extr
action of amino acids; and achiral gadolinium-porphyrin acted as a uni
que CD probe for chirality determination of amino acids.
