The IR spectra of wool fibers gamma-irradiated in mixtures of two orga
nic solvents were recorded. The analysis of the spectra showed that ir
radiation of wool fibers in the presence of certain mixtures results i
n the appearance of an absorption band at 1725 cm(-1) corresponding to
the absorption of the carbonyl groups. The intensity of the COO- band
at 1400 cm(-1) is influenced by the nature of the solvents and the co
ncentration of each solvent in the mixture. This band disappears when
the fibers are irradiated in the presence of ethyl alcohol. The intens
ities of the absorption bands in the region 1000-1200 cm(-1) vary also
according to the nature of the solvents. Furthermore, the absorbances
of amide I and amide II bands were determined. It was found that the
induced changes in the absorbances of these bands depend on the dipole
moment of the solvents.
