Abstract
A doughnut light beam with zero intensity on its axis, azimuthal direc tion of the vector of electric field strength, a spiral wave front, an d orbital angular momentum l (h) over bar (l = 1, 2, 3,...) per photon is analyzed. Focusing such a beam into the equatorial zone of an atom , one can generate a field efficient for multipole excitation of an at om and transfer of a high angular momentum l (h) over bar to this atom .
