Adolescents infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) often
confront the clinician with difficult medical problems. Besides the h
ost of opportunistic infections, which can affect these patients, side
effects from medications can be frequent and, at times, life-threaten
ing. We report a case of aseptic meningitis secondary to trimethoprim-
sulfamethoxazole therapy for prophylaxis against Pneumocystis carinii
in an HIV-infected adolescent.
