Abstract
The Met. Office mesoscale model assimilates surface rain rate estimates fro m the UK weather radar network. Plans are described to improve the radar as similation by use of a physically based radar quality estimate, which takes account of lower accuracy in derived surface rain rate when the beam is ab ove the freezing level. Work is in progress to extend the data coverage by integration of radars from countries neighbouring the UK to the south. Mode l impact trials of these changes are scheduled for summer 2000.
