Abstract
It is shown that the transition probability between two discrete energy lev els, in the framework of time-dependent perturbation theory, can be express ed in terms of the Wigner distribution functions of these states. This phas e space formulation of Fermi's golden rule generalizes a previous result va lid for Franck-Condon transitions. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B .V.
