A general method was developed for the covalent functionalization of natura
l rubber latex with fluorinated phenyl azides. Surface functionalization wa
s carried out in either aqueous or organic solvents. The use of poly(ethyle
ne glycol) and hyaluronic acid resulted in biocompatible coatings that prev
ented proteins from leaching out of the latex. Latex functionalized under a
queous conditions retained their physical properties after storing at room
