Abstract
The development of a self-sustained volume gas discharge is studied numeric ally. Special attention is paid to the formation and stability of the catho de sheath. It is shown that the high-voltage threshold for the ignition of a volume discharge is determined by the onset of cathode sheath instability . The methods for suppressing cathode sheath instability are discussed. (C) 2000 MAIK "Nauka/ Interperiodica".
