In the first part of this paper we discuss the general notion of feature fr
om a theoretical point of view. These considerations are needed as an intro
duction to the discussion of the feature (continuant). We then go on to pre
sent diachronic phonological processes (spreading and delinking processes)
which affect continuancy. In the last part of the paper we discuss the poss
iblities of modelling the apparently odd behavior of the feature. No defini
tive solutions are offered here, but two ideas are discussed which may poin
t in the right direction.
