Abstract
Veterinary education in Vienna was stagnant during the Napoleonic wars. The "k.k. Militair-Thierarzneyschule" (from 1808 "k.k. Thierarzneyinstitut'') was operated by the imperial war office (Kriegskanzlei), the education of f arriers was the main goal beside the education of physicians in the field o f animal infectious diseases. Gottfried Ubald Fechner, born 1765 in Neustad t in Posen (today Poland), passed 1831 as medical practitioner in Vienna, w as director of the institute between 1809 and 1812. His scientific work is obviously of minor importance; personal data is presented.
