Abstract
Early uses of hypertext technologies were associated with scholarly communi cation. New electronic-only journals have been quick to adopt hypertext/hyp ermedia technologies. Existing print journals have also started to adopt su ch technologies as they make the transition to parallel delivery. The wides pread uptake of the World Wide Web has enabled journals to improve, enhance and transform what they do. This paper surveys these developments and plac es them in context.
