Abstract
We describe recent work in the area of lexical semantics as it applies to t he task of automatic hypertext construction. A discussion of the basic prin ciples of lexical cohesion is used to inform the discussion of a method for extracting sets of lexically related words from a text - a process called lexical chaining. We discuss how various researchers have used lexical chai ns to perform automatic hypertext construction and related tasks.
