Abstract
In this short paper, we briefly overview the history of hypertext in the Wo rld Wide Web. The Web started with hypertext functions that have disappeare d from the early popular browsers, and some are still not present in today' s dominant browsers. The hypertext community has proposed ways to bring mor e sophisticated hypertext into the Web, and the new XML proposals are makin g many of these into mainstream functions.
