Abstract
A new species of fossil grasshopper, Mioedipoda reisereri Stidham & Stidham , is the first insect to be described from the Miocene (15.5 million year o ld) Buffalo Canyon Formation of west-central Nevada. This fossil is identif ied as an oedipodine and is the oldest supportable band-winged grasshopper from North America. This species appears to be a primitive oedipodine and i s perhaps the sister taxon to extant band-winged grasshoppers.
