Abstract
Sigmund Freud dated the year of publication of the "Interpretation of Dream s" slightly forward to the year 1900. He was deeply convinced that it would turn out to be a century book - which indeed it became. Today in the human ities we distinguish the epoques before and after Freud. Thus Freud's dream was fullfilled. This paper first describes Freud's sucessful beginnings as neuro-scientist and his transition to psychoanalysis. A specimen of a drea m displays the basic mechanisms of dreaming and opens the way to a theory o f dream work. Today psychoanalysts focus on the interactive aspects of the material of a given session which are most likely to support the process of actual understanding.
