Abstract
A high-resolution phylogenetic analysis of Nitrobacter strains and their ne ighbours was made using the rrs-rrl intergenic spacer sequence and the hype rvariable part of the rrl gene. The phylogenetic tree obtained was hypervar iable parr or the rrl gene. The phylogenetic tree obtained was consistent w ith that which was obtained previously but was much more discriminating, pe rmitting the design of genus-specific primers.
